What Is a Leadership Score?

A Leadership Score rates how consistently a stock is exhibiting the technical characteristics of a genuine market leader: trend quality, relative strength, and momentum. Here's how it's calculated and how to use it.

Not every stock that's up today is a leader. Some are catching up after being late to a move; some are bouncing off lows; some are riding sector tailwinds without showing real institutional sponsorship. A Leadership Score attempts to distinguish the genuine leaders from the noise by scoring stocks on the technical characteristics that tend to precede continued outperformance.

What the score measures

WideRadar scores stocks across several dimensions, each weighted to reward the behaviours institutional momentum traders look for:

• Trend regime — Is the stock's 50-day SMA above its 200-day? Stocks in a confirmed uptrend (50d above 200d) score higher; stocks in downtrends are filtered out entirely from the ranked list.
• Relative strength vs. SPY — A 1-month × 3-month blended RS calculation shows whether the stock is outperforming the broad market over recent periods, not just over a single day.
• Momentum characteristics — ATR extension, RSI positioning, and volume behaviour relative to the recent average.
• Price location relative to moving averages — A stock trading tightly above its key moving averages scores better than one that's extended or has recently undercut them.

The result is a 0-100 composite score. A score above 70 suggests a stock showing consistent leader behaviour; above 85 puts it among the elite setups in the market.

The 50d > 200d filter

The Leaders tab only shows stocks where the 50-day SMA is above the 200-day SMA. This is a deliberate quality gate: stocks in a confirmed uptrend are the only ones eligible for a full leadership score.

A stock in a confirmed downtrend (50d below 200d) can still score well on individual metrics, but including it in a leadership ranking produces false positives — names that are optically strong on one metric but structurally broken. The 50d/200d filter removes most of those traps before any scoring begins.

How to use the Leadership Score practically

The score is most useful as a filter and a relative ranking tool, not as a buy signal by itself:

• Screen for a shortlist — sort the full universe by Leadership Score and focus only on the top 100-200 names. This is where the strongest setups are most likely to appear.
• Compare candidates within a sector — when you're already focused on a leading sector, use the score to rank the stocks within it and prioritise the highest-scored ones for deeper analysis.
• Flag gainers worth following up — the Gainers/Losers tab includes the Leadership Score for every mover. A gainer with a score above 80 that's breaking out of a base on high volume is a very different animal from a low-scored name bouncing off a breakdown.
• Watch for Emerging Leaders — the Emerging Leaders table surfaces stocks whose RS is accelerating. These are names where the score may still be moderate but is rising — sometimes the earliest indicator of institutional accumulation.

What a high score doesn't mean

A high Leadership Score reflects the current technical picture. It does not predict earnings surprises, mean the stock won't pull back, or imply anything about the underlying business quality. Use it as a context filter — not as a substitute for chart analysis, position sizing, and risk management.

The score is recalculated daily from fresh OHLCV data. A stock that scores 90 today may score 60 after a gap-down earnings miss — and that's the correct output. The score follows the tape.
